Why Volunteers Matter
The House of Hope volunteers are an essential part of the Rescue's operations. Volunteers assist with many tasks including in-rescue animal care and training, rescue fundraising, administrative operations, animal transportation, stray rescue capture, Rescue operation, and, adoption and foster vetting and events.
Because The House of Hope specializes in large-breed and giant dogs, including senior dogs, it is important that our volunteers understand and be able to help advance the mission of the Rescue.
Additional Information for Volunteers & Fosters
All House of Hope Volunteers Must be 21 years or older and commit to at least 18 hours of service per quarter.
To ensure the safety and integrity of the volunteer program, all volunteers are required to provide a valid government-issued photo identification (such as a driver's license, state identification card, or passport) prior to beginning any volunteer service.
Certain volunteer roles may also require the completion of a limited background check, which may include verification of identity, criminal history, and driving record, as applicable to the position.
All identification and background information will be used solely for verification and placement purposes and will be kept strictly confidential in accordance with applicable laws and Fairfax County policies.
Failure to provide valid identification or to complete required background screening may disqualify an applicant from participation in volunteer activities.
The onboarding process for all volunteers & fosters includes:
- Attending a Virtual Volunteer Information Session
- Completing a Foster Application (only after attending the info session) which may include a background check and additional training

Attending Orientation
- Please note that for dog handler volunteer roles, additional mentor training is required.
- Positions involving sensitive information or finances may also involve a background check and additional training.
- Volunteers & Fosters must attend periodic training and informational sessions.
- All House of Hope volunteers will be provided with a t-shirt and long-sleeved shirt that must be worn when on duty.
- Additional House of Hope merchandise may be purchased from our store.

The House of Hope Is Always Seeking Community Partners. The Rescue Aims to Work with the Animal Community to Save as Many Dogs as Possible.
